What Is the Charme Dance AI Trend? The Grandpa Joke, Explained

TL;DR — The charme dance AI trend is the October 2026 TikTok wave of AI videos that put someone new in the lead spot of one 27-second clip from Rio.

That clip features Seu Zé de Madureira, a grandpa made with AI who out-dances the whole night crowd packed into Pedra do Sal, a historic square in Rio. The @seuzerj account posted it on October 16, 2026.

The dance is charme, smooth Rio street dancing that goes back to the early 1980s, and it isn't funk. The trend's one-photo CapCut template passed 312,803 uses by October 20, 2026.

On Charme Dance AI, one photo puts you, your grandma or a character in that lead spot for 15 seconds, with the clip's own audio.

Your feed keeps serving the same floodlit Rio square at night with somebody different in the middle. You'll see a grandpa with a white afro one day and Van Damme in a denim shirt the next.

The comments keep asking who that grandpa is, if any of it's real, where that square is and how to get their own face in it. Tutorials call it "retro Brazilian funk" and send people to a template that won't open for everyone.

We watched the clip and 16 of its remakes frame by frame, dated every number we quote and made our own video. You'll get the joke, the dates, what's AI and what's real, the place, the dance, and how to take the lead spot yourself.

The Charme Dance AI Trend in One Sentence

The charme dance AI trend brings AI remakes of one viral clip. In it, a grandpa made with AI dances charme in a Rio square at night, and the remakes put someone new in his spot.

  • What it does: One photo of a person or character goes in, and AI puts them in the lead spot. In the remakes that keep the Seu Zé clip, the crowd and the moves stay put, and on our maker the clip's own audio does too.
  • Popular styles and references: Creators feature 80s action heroes, with Van Damme in a denim shirt first. Then come many other famous faces, and Seu Zé himself. The square is Pedra do Sal in Rio, and the dance is charme.
  • Where to find it: Clips live on TikTok, under #BaileCharme, #VanDammeBailando and #TendenciaIACapCut. The original clip is on the @seuzerj account.
  • What people call it: People call it the Seu Zé de Madureira dance, baile charme AI, the Van Damme charme dance and the Pedra do Sal AI dance.

We've made our own video with our maker from one photo of a man made with AI, who isn't a real person.

Add one photo, pick 720p and press Create on our charme dance AI maker, and someone new takes the lead spot.

Why the Charme Dance AI Trend Is Funny: Nobody Believed in Grandpa

The charme dance AI trend is funny because the dancer nobody expected owns the floor. The Seu Zé caption says so in one line: "Ninguém botou fé no vovô no baile charme" (nobody had faith in grandpa at the baile charme).

Seu Zé de Madureira is a character from the @seuzerj account, where every post is made with AI, so there's no real man behind him. He's got round glasses, a white afro, a red short-sleeved shirt with black suspenders, and a bum bag.

In the 27-second clip, he out-dances everyone packed into Pedra do Sal. From about 4 seconds, the guy in the brown hat and white tank top joins in at his shoulder. A man in a shell necklace with long braids dances close by.

By October 20, 2026, the post had 104,600 plays, 3,140 likes and 70 comments.

The post asks you to tag the friend who only dances charme once it's past midnight: "Marca aquele amigo que só dança charme depois da meia-noite".

The top comment, with 6 likes, opens with "onde faz este video" (where is this video made). Its writer wanted their own photo in one.

One commenter, with 5 likes, wrote "quem sabe não esquece, é como andar de bicicleta" (if you know it, you don't forget it, it's like riding a bike). Another commenter, with 2 likes, wrote "eu quando me aposentar" (me once I retire).

The joke works with anyone the crowd doesn't expect, from a grandma to the friend who stays glued to the wall.

Here's an illustration of that tag-a-friend idea.

Charme Dance AI Trend Timeline: October 13 to 20, 2026

The charme dance AI trend went from its first AI remake to a one-photo template with more than 300,000 uses in one week. That week ran from October 13 to October 20, 2026.

  • October 13, 2026: The first AI remake we found goes up. It shows 80s action-movie heroes dancing in a floodlit Rio square much like the one in the Seu Zé clip, Van Damme among them in a denim shirt.
  • October 16, 2026: The @seuzerj account posts the 27-second Seu Zé de Madureira clip, set at Pedra do Sal.
  • October 18, 2026: A one-photo template named "Ty" appears on CapCut, and tutorials in Spanish and Portuguese pointing to it go up that same day.
  • October 19, 2026: English tutorials follow on TikTok.
  • October 20, 2026: The template climbs from 238,309 uses to 312,803 in about 12 and a half hours, nearly 6,000 an hour. The biggest Spanish tutorial reaches 751,200 plays.

On TikTok, #bailecharme counts 16,472 videos and 188.6 million views, most of them real baile charme nights. Meanwhile, #charmedanceai has just 5 videos, so almost nobody tags the trend with its English name.

Under six tutorials, 17 of 135 written comments say the template doesn't work or the button never shows up. And 10 complain that it wants money ("tem que pagar", you have to pay).

If your template fails to load, our guide on the charme dance CapCut template walks through the fixes.

What's AI and What's Real in the Charme Dance AI Trend

In the charme dance AI trend, Seu Zé, his clip and the remakes are made with AI, while Pedra do Sal and charme itself are real.

We checked each row on October 20 and 21, 2026.

We went through 16 TikTok remakes frame by frame during our research.

In half of the 16 remakes we checked, the footage is the Seu Zé clip, frame for frame from 0 seconds on. Only the dancer is different: same neighbours, same blue tents. The other 8 show a newly made scene that only resembles the square.

Some tools build a new party around you instead, and our breakdown of charme dance AI generators looks at how they compare.

Here's the photo we started from and three moments of the video it became.

Pedra do Sal: The Rio Square Behind the Charme Dance AI Clip

Pedra do Sal is the real square in the Seu Zé clip, a historic samba landmark in the Saúde neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro.

Pedra do Sal ("Rock of Salt") was originally a quilombo (a community founded by people who escaped slavery). Rio de Janeiro state's heritage institute, INEPAC, listed it in 1984. It's a center of samba and choro music and the heart of the area known locally as "Little Africa".

The clip shows two big white floodlights glaring into the lens and old colonial houses with painted murals. You'll also see a row of blue tents and hundreds of people packed shoulder to shoulder at night.

Real charme dancers have posted themselves dancing at night in the crowd that packs Pedra do Sal since at least August 2026.

Under one post from August 7, 2026, with 1.6 million plays, the top comment has 23,018 likes: "na internet a pedra do sal é tao poética" (online, Pedra do Sal looks so poetic). Another comment with 806 likes adds, "Sinto que perdi o melhor rolê da minha vida" (I feel like I missed the best night out of my life). And 18 comments ask where and when the party happens.

On TikTok, #pedradosal counts 11,982 videos and 301 million views.

The clip's set at Pedra do Sal, not under the Madureira viaduct. The caption says Seu Zé only went to Pedra do Sal for a spin.

That square is why people also call the trend the Pedra do Sal AI dance.

In a video from our maker, the square stays just as it is in the clip, as shown here.

Charme vs Baile Funk: The Dance in the Trend

Charme is the dance in the charme dance AI trend, a smooth Rio street dance, and baile funk is a different thing.

Charme was born in Brazil in the early 1980s as a street dance style. It and baile funk both grew out of the 1970s bailes black (Black parties playing soul, funk and R&B) during the Black Rio movement.

But the scene split in two in the 1980s. Baile charme took smoother rhythms, contemporary R&B and love songs. Baile funk took fast, high-energy beats influenced by Miami bass.

Tutorials often caption the trend "retro Brazilian funk". Under one Portuguese tutorial, one commenter wrote "Isso e um Funk da antiga" (that's old-school funk). Another commenter wrote "isso é charme não funk" (that's charme, not funk).

We tracked the lead dancer's steps beat by beat through the clip:

  • Look back: At about 0.5 seconds, the dancer throws a quick, cool look back at the phone.
  • Groove: At about 2.5 seconds, the dancer takes little side steps left and right, shoulders bouncing and forearms loose in front of the hips. Around 4 seconds, the guy in the brown hat and white tank top joins in.
  • Lean in: From about 6.5 to 9 seconds, the dancer does the signature charme move, leaning forward with the hands gliding past each other at waist height.
  • Turn: At about 10 to 11 seconds, the dancer takes a half turn to face the crowd.
  • Back to the camera: From 12 to 15 seconds, the dancer turns back around to the lens while hands go up in the crowd.

Here's the Lean in step, the signature charme move.

Rio's Baile Charme, From DJ Corello to the Madureira Viaduct

Rio's baile charme is the city's charme dance party, named by DJ Corello in 1980. It's held every Saturday night under the Madureira viaduct, and it has been since the early 1990s.

DJ Corello named the style charme on March 8, 1980, during a party at the Mackenzie club in the Méier neighborhood. DW reports he called out: "It's time for the charm, move your bodies very slowly."

The famous gathering under the Negrão de Lima viaduct, which locals call the Dutão, turned 30 in 2020. The Espaço Rio Charme under that overpass dates from 1993.

DW calls the Saturday-night scene under the Madureira viaduct the oldest and also the largest dance party of its kind. The crowd dances a set routine: "One step forward, one to the left, half a turn, a swing of the hips, then to the right." Those set group routines are called passinhos (little steps).

Aparecida Rejane, 47, has been a regular at the Madureira baile charme since her teens. She told Brasil de Fato: "A galera é muito receptiva, se você não sabe dançar te ensinam os passinhos na maior paciência" (the crowd is really welcoming: if you can't dance, they'll teach you the steps with all the patience in the world).

Rio de Janeiro made the party under the Madureira viaduct part of the city's intangible cultural heritage in 2013.

The post's joke ties right back to this history. Its caption reads "O Seu Zé deu um rolé na Pedra do Sal, mas é cria do Viaduto de Madureira!" (Seu Zé took a spin at Pedra do Sal, but he was raised at the Madureira viaduct!).

Who People Put in the Lead Spot, Van Damme Included

People put whoever the crowd least expects in the lead spot of the charme dance AI trend. Among the first was Van Damme in a denim shirt, in the AI remakes of October 13, 2026.

On TikTok, #vandammebailando has 9.1 million views across 2,054 videos. TikTok's search box suggests "van damme dance filter", "van damme dance original" and "van damme dance template". People call this version the Van Damme charme dance.

Other remakes that went viral put many other famous faces right in front of the same crowd.

You don't need an action star to make the joke work. The underdog premise fits a grandma or grandpa, the friend who stays glued to the wall, yourself, or even a cartoon or game character.

On Charme Dance AI Videos for TikTok and Reels, one photo per video puts that person or character in the lead spot. You can use a photo of yourself, a grandparent, a parent or a friend, as long as each person is 18 or older. You can also pick a cartoon, game or AI-made character, including a character sheet with a face close-up and full-body views.

Their face, hair, build and every piece of the outfit come from the photo. If you want the 80s action look, dress the part in denim before taking your shot.

Follow this photo hint: "One person or one character per photo, face clear, facing the camera, in good light. Full body works best."

Charme Dance AI Trend: Quick Answers

What does "Ninguém botou fé no vovô no baile charme" mean?

The phrase means "nobody had faith in grandpa at the baile charme". It's the first line of the Seu Zé caption on TikTok. The joke is that the grandpa nobody believed in ends up owning the night.

Is dance AI real?

Yes, AI dance is real. AI takes one photo and puts that person in a dance video, so they never have to dance. In the charme dance AI trend, the dancers are made with AI, while Pedra do Sal and charme are real.

The charme dance AI trend is one of the most popular AI dances of October 2026. Its one-photo CapCut template climbed from 238,309 to 312,803 uses on October 20, 2026 alone. The hashtag #vandammebailando has 9.1 million views.

What music do charme dance AI videos use?

Videos use the clip's own audio, which includes the party's music and crowd noise, labeled "som original - seuzerj" on TikTok. Many posts lay "Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice over it from TikTok's sound library. "Seu Zé de Madureira" is the grandpa's name, not a song.

Why do people call it the Van Damme charme dance?

People call it that because of the first AI remakes, on October 13, 2026. They put 80s action heroes in a floodlit Rio square, Van Damme among them in a denim shirt. For that look in your own video, dress the part before you take the photo.

Where can I watch the original Seu Zé clip?

You can watch the original Seu Zé clip on TikTok. The @seuzerj account posted it on October 16, 2026, and it's 27 seconds long. Our maker uses its first 15 seconds.
